Aberdare National Park
Shamata Gate, on the Ndaragwa side, is the closest way into the Aberdare National Park from the hotel. The park climbs from 2,000 m to 4,000 m through montane forest and bamboo to open moorland.
From Shamata, guided hikes climb Ol Donyo Lesatima (4,001 m), the highest Aberdare peak, past the Dragon's Teeth rocks: 14–18 km and 6–8 hours.
- Summit hike to Ol Donyo Lesatima
- Moorland and waterfalls
- Forest birding
The last 11 km is dirt road: use a 4×4, and call KWS to confirm the gate is open before you set off.
